THE SEMED MISSION

Startup Europe Mediterranean (SEMED) is an initiative powered by FacilityLive, in collaboration with the European Commission’s Startup Europe initiative, to connect the innovation ecosystem of the Mediterranean and create opportunities for the entire ecosystem: people, startups, investors, corporates, SMEs, universities, policymakers, research centres, incubators, accelerators and communities.

We plan to connect innovation ecosystems in the Mediterranean region, discovering digital startups and much more, and learning about all the activities and the events by the all the stakeholders of the region.

HOW SEMED WORKS

While the network will continue its expansion activities, during 2019 the FacilityLive’s Cloud Platform will be inaugurated and will offer a virtual interconnected space where people, startups, investors, corporates, SMEs, universitiespolicymakers, research centres, incubators, accelerators and communities can search, find, meet, learn about the ecosystem, and drive investment, but also meet other stakeholders, exchange information, ideas, experiences and build business links to grow the ecosystem.

SEMED TESTIMONIALS

Europe and the South Med have already strong links: social, political and cultural. We need to strengthen its relationship with the EU in the context of the digital transformation and ensure that we can promote a strong and inclusive digital future for all.

Mariya Gabriel,

European Commissioner responsible for Digital Economy and Society

“Recalls the need to increasingly exploit the largely untapped potential for innovation and dynamism of the private sector in the region; encourages the EU to step up dialogue, financial and technical assistance in this sense; welcomes initiatives such as Startup Europe Mediterranean (SEMED) to map and establish a network between startups, investors, universities, research institutions and policymakers in the two shores of the Mediterranean, as a key action to stimulate cooperation on innovation, job creation and sustainable economic growth.”

Starting from the Startup Manifesto by the European Commission 5 years ago, the Startup Europe initiative has scaled up globally, precisely like startups do. The launch of this new network for the Mediterranean represents a significant step ahead because it links together different EU priorities: startups, investment but also the strategy for the Mediterranean as a geo-strategic area with innovation at the centre of the neighbourhood policy, development and cooperation and migration. Moreover for the first time it’s a European scaleup, in collaboration with the Commission, to lead an initiative that is usually lead by foundations, associations or corporates.

Isidro Laso Ballesteros,

Head of Startup Europe, DG Connect, European Commission

“In my capacity of Director General ITEC, I am very happy and proud to see that SEMED (Startup Europe Mediterranean) builds also on the experience of the EU Tech Study Tour organized by DG ITEC at the European Parliament together with DG DIGIT at the European Commission and the colleagues at the Council. We think that initiatives such as SEMED are very important in the current economic and cultural landscape, and I strongly support SEMED as a much needed network for the future of technologies.”

Giancarlo Vilella,

Director General, Directorate General Innovation and Technological Support (DG ITEC), European Parliament

Giancarlo Vilella,

My personal history demonstrates that the Mediterranean is a land full of opportunities. Talent is fundamental, along with execution and hard work on the field. My career is linked to those who invested in my talent. Finding people who invests in talent is key for the future.

Serial Investor and Serie A and Italian National Team professional football player

SEMED NEWS

WHERE SEMED STARTED

SEMED is an idea born in FacilityLive’s Headquarters in Pavia, Italy, the southernmost founding country of the European Union. Another Italian city in the South, Matera, one of the most ancient cities in the world and a source of innovation dating back to 8000 years ago, is the European Capital of Culture in 2019. Due to its geographical position and thanks to its strong Mediterranean cultural identity, to be celebrated in 2019 as a symbol of the European culture, Matera is the natural location to start hosting some of the activities bridging the European Union with the whole Mediterranean region, with the support of an operational office in Potenza, the capital of Basilicata, the Italian region where Matera is located.
